Dred Scott was a slave from Missouri, US (a slave state). He was taken from Missouri to Illinois (a free state). Thereafter, he was moved into Wisconsin (a free territory). When he wanted to purchase his freedom, he was refused. This led him to file a case with the US Supreme Court. The ruling of this legal case came out in March 1857 whereby the Supreme Court ruled that: • Even if a slave (Dred Scott in this case) had resided in a free state or such territory where slavery, by law, was prohibited, he would not be entitled to his freedom. • Additionally, the ruling stated that the African Americans were not and could never be the US citizens
